On our way to Lake Manyara Tree Lodge we rounded a corner with Claude at the wheel and came face to face with a huge bull elephant in the road. We scared him as much as he scared us. He immediately turned and started for the jeep with ears flared and trumpeting. The jeep was put in reverse and we retreated. Needless to say, we were all silent in the jeep and the adrenaline was pumping (in a good way I must say ... so very exciting). The elephant did stop, stared at us, turned and proceeded to mosey down the road. As we would get close, he would raise his left front leg, which Claude said was a sign that he was telling us that we were too close. We kept our distance and he eventually left the road and went into the trees. WHAT A THRILL.
