Sustainability at Lake Manyara Tree Lodge
At &Beyond we seek to maintain a low impact on the land while deriving high yield for our conservation initiatives by creating very small luxury lodges that support enormous tracts of biodiverse land, which remains untouched. At every lodge we seek out small (and sometimes not so small) but meaningful ways of putting our values into action every day. Each &Beyond lodge supports the conservation of wildlife and contributes to its neighbouring communities in one way or another. In addition, we seek to limit our impact in terms of fossil fuels, the use of renewable energy, water and waste management, and recycling.
At Lake Manyara Tree Lodge wet waste from the kitchen is donated to a nearby community farmer as feed for his animals.
Current Sustainability projects at Lake Manyara Tree Lodge
Anna and Doctor Bijima
over 20 years ago, missionaries helped establish a dispensary in the Mayoka community, situated just outside of Lake Manyara National Park. A few years ago, the clinic was handed over to the community, and a nurse by the name of Anna ran the clinic entirely on her own. Every day, Anna walked 4 km from her home to the dispensary to tend to patients. Africa Foundation helped Anna mobilise the community to repair and repaint the building, and this work was recognised by the District Medical Officer who then appointed a full-time doctor to the clinic. Anna and Doctor Bijima now provide medical care to 5 000 community members.
Monitoring of Olive Baboons and other wildlife
Lake Manyara National Park is home to several large troops of Olive Baboon and these primates have been the subject of monitoring work conducted by senior Lake Manyara Tree Lodge guides. All interesting mammal, bird and reptile observations are recorded on an ongoing basis and published in &Beyond's 'WildWatch' annual. &Beyond guides work closely with Manyara National Parks rangers and warden.
Positive Health
Working closely with the Africa Foundation, Lake Manyara Tree Lodge works with staff and communities in nearby Moyoka to follow a Wellness programme geared towards developing and maintaining a healthy immune system. Diet, natural vitamins and minerals, and the cultivation of a positive attitude are among the key factors in fighting chronic illness including HIV/Aids.
Support for the protection of East Usambara mountain forests
The Wildlife Conservation Society of Tanzania is the designated national partner of BirdLife International and works to conserve areas of critical importance for the country's biodiversity. &Beyond is currently funding a WCST monitoring project of the Long-billed Tailorbird and Amani Sunbird, two globally threatened bird species, in the East Usambara mountains.
This Little Piggie
&Beyond Lake Manyara Tree Lodge has come up with an ingenious way of recycling their old kitchen waste. They have teamed up with a local pig farmer and by supplying him with their leftover scraps, they have not only solved their garbage problem, but they are also helping the farmer to keep his pigs happy and well fed.
