Sustainability at Madikwe Game Reserve
At &Beyond we seek to maintain a low impact on the land while deriving high yield for our conservation initiatives by creating very small luxury lodges that support enormous tracts of biodiverse land, which remains untouched. At every lodge we seek out small (and sometimes not so small) but meaningful ways of putting our values into action every day. Each &Beyond lodge supports the conservation of wildlife and contributes to its neighbouring communities in one way or another. In addition, we seek to limit our impact in terms of fossil fuels, the use of renewable energy, water and waste management, and recycling.
For example, Madikwe Safari Lodge sponsors radio collars for monitoring endangered wild dog.
Current Sustainability projects at Madikwe Game Reserve
Bricks aren’t just for building!
&Beyond Madikwe Safari Lodge has discovered that bricks are not only useful for building, but they are also an effective water saving mechanism. By placing a brick in each toilet’s cistern, less water is required to fill up the tank thereby reducing Madikwe’s water consumption.
Conservation Victory at Madikwe Safari Lodge
Four beautiful African wild dogs (two females and two males) were released onto Madikwe Game Reserve in December 2006, adding healthy new genes to Madikwe's thriving population of this highly endangered species. Madikwe Safari Lodge sponsored the refurbishment of the collars, which are used to monitor the rehabilitation process and extract valuable research on these rare animals.
Environmental Responsibility
Madikwe Safari Lodge's Green Team ensures that all waste is recycled or otherwise removed from the reserve. A strict water conservation program is in place at the lodge.
Goal is Life Soccer Challenge
Madikwe Safari Lodge, situated in the malaria-free Madikwe Game Reserve, recently had the privilege of hosting Brazilian soccer superstar, Fabio Oliveira, who spent the day in the nearby Molatedi Community entertaining the primary school children.
Madikwe Guests Raise Money for Education and Conservation
Madikwe Safari Lodge in the Madikwe Game Reserve, recently hosted guests from Auction Alliance, a leading South African Auction Company. The guests were competing in the World Male & Female Auctioneering Championships, and successfully auctioned off three bottles of wine for a whopping R15 000!!
Madikwe Safari Lodge Wins for 'Goal is Life' Soccer Challenge!
&Beyond's 'Goal is Life' initiative, aimed at inspiring our staff and communities to look after their health, has encouraged each &Beyond lodge to form a soccer team and participate in the challenge. &Beyond's teams play against each other and with outside teams to fight for the privilege of winning tickets to watch the 2010 Soccer World Cup. Madikwe Safari Lodge's soccer players recently received their stylish new uniforms, which they donned for two riveting games against their rival team from Madikwe River Lodge. It seems like all the practice is paying off as the &BeyondERS came away victorious in both matches!
Monitoring of Wildlife
Madikwe Safari Lodge rangers work closely with the North-West Parks reserve management, assisting with the monitoring of wildlife such as Black-backed Jackals, Wild Dog, Cheetah and Black Rhino. All wildlife observations are carefully documented and published in &Beyond's WildWatch annual.
