Veggies Flourish Near the Okavango Delta
&Beyond Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge and &Beyond Foundation joined forces with the local government to plant a sustainable vegetable garden in the Shorobe community. Recently, a borehole and water tank were added, and guest donations to &Beyond Foundation have enabled the purchase of a delivery vehicle to transport the vegetables. The garden is maintained by the community members, with some assistance from the maintenance teams at our lodges. &Beyond’s Delta lodges purchase fresh vegetables from Shorobe every month. Not only can the community members provide their families with fresh produce, but they also have a sustainable source of income.
What you can do to help a local community
If you don’t already have a veggie garden, team up with a local community to start one up, or look for an existing community garden in need of some assistance. Where possible, try to buy locally-grown/produced supplies (even if these are only used in the staff canteen to start with) as this will not only reduce your carbon footprint, but will also help uplift a local community enterprise.
