Bushmen of the Kalahari
Fly-in safari, 4 Nights / 5 Days
Start anticipating your African adventure with a short summary of what you can expect each day on safari to bring.
This adventure begins and ends at Maun International Airport in Botswana.
On arrival at Maun International Airport you will be warmly welcomed by a member of the &Beyond team, who will help you onto a scheduled light aircraft flight to Xai Xai Airstrip in the Western Kalahari. On landing, you will meet your guide, an expert zoologist and biologist, who will drive you to a secluded campsite deep in the ancestral gathering lands of the Zu'hoasi Bushmen.
Spend four nights in a traditional Bushmen grass shelter, with a comfortable bed, adjacent private bucket shower and bush toilet.
In the afternoon you can enjoy a gentle stroll to a nearby Bushmen village to view the daily interactions of these fascinating people.
After a delicious breakfast, strap on your hiking boots for a walk in the wilderness, accompanied by your guide and the Bushmen. Your guide will point out the distinct ecological characteristics of this area, as well as fascinating animal and bird species. The Bushmen will provide insight into their use of plants for culinary and medicinal use. Help the Bushmen collect a selection of plants that will be prepared for your lunch back at the campsite.
After a lunch of traditional Bushmen fare, retreat to your hut for a well-deserved siesta before returning to the village for a lesson in jewellery making and food preparation. As the day draws to an end, delight in a traditional melon dance, a joyful celebration of a successful harvest performed by the village women.
Meet the men of the village after breakfast to prepare for a traditional hunt. This adventure entails gathering the necessary tools, from poison grub beetles to roots, sanseveria leaves and branches, which you will use to make rope, bows and arrows with the help of the Bushmen.
In the afternoon you will return to the village for a lesson in bow, arrow and quiver making. Afterwards there will be a demonstration of the traditional games used by the young men to develop the hand-to-eye coordinating necessary for the next day's hunt.
After an early breakfast, you will depart for an adventure-filled day of hunting with the Bushmen. Track, stalk and, hopefully, hunt down your wild quarry using a traditional bow and arrows, stopping along the way for a picnic lunch.
Bid the community farewell as you are driven back to Xai Xai airstrip for a light aircraft flight to Maun International Airport, where your adventure with us will end.
